Looking for an affordable way to travel extensively and really live in and learn about another culture?

If so, then you may want to consider an overseas work/travel program. BUNAC has over has over 40 years of experience in providing working adventures worldwide for students and young people seeking an alternative to package tourism. On a BUNAC program, you have the chance to live and breathe another culture from the inside rather than simply passing through as a tourist.

BUNAC's experience and contacts make it easy for you to get there, find a job, and a place to live, and assist you with your travels. Participants can be independent, finding their own way in a different culture, but BUNAC is always there to assist you if need be.

BUNAC currently offers US students and young people work/travel programs to Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Each program offers a unique insight into life in a completely new culture and a chance to spend extended time working and travelling overseas. In addition BUNAC USA offers a volunteer placement program in South Africa. Here is a profile of one of BUNAC's programs called Work in Britain.

Work in Britain Program Profile

Britain is a great destination for young travelers, offering grand castles, traditional pubs, great shopping, museums and stately homes, outrageous fashions and trend-setting music and theater. But to really get to know the British people and British way of life, nothing beats living and working in the UK for an extended period of time.

Through BUNAC's Work in Britain program, you can become a part of everyday British life and experience first-hand Britain's amazing blend of old and new. As a Work in Britain participant, you are able to take almost any type of job, anywhere in Britain for up to six months. Using program or personal contacts, participants can work in a wide variety of jobs including career-related or study-related positions ranging from bartender to banker, office temp to theater usher. Britain may be small but nevertheless offers a wide variety of places in which to live and work. Take your pick from the metropolitan area of London, one of the large northern cities such as Manchester, historic York or Edinburgh, rural Britain, or a seaside resort. As a participant of Work in Britain, you are able to work anywhere in Britain - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - so you get four countries in one!

How the Program Works

Work in Britain is sponsored by BUNAC and the Blue Card is issued from the BUNAC office in Southbury, Connecticut. In the UK, BUNAC has offices in London and Edinburgh. The program fee is $275.

The Student Exchange Employment Program Blue Card provided to Work in Britain participants acts as an entry visa and allows US university students to work in Britain for up to six months maximum. The program is approved by the British Government and is a reciprocal work/ travel exchange program. The Blue Card is available to full-time US students who are US citizens or permanent US residents aged 18 and upwards.

Blue Card
special, government-approved student work document valid for maximum of six months from initial date of entry into the UK.

Program Handbook
includes tax, national insurance, general advice on life in Britain, accommodation information and employer listings.

Discount Accommodation
for the first three nights in London, if required.

Orientation
in BUNAC's London or Edinburgh office. Provides vital information on jobs and accommodation, essential government paperwork and a welcome pack including maps and student guides.

Free International Student House Membership
facilities include fitness center and internet cafe.

Free National Express Coachcard
giving up to 30% discount on the national bus network and some European routes.

Phonecard
including voice and fax mail facilities.

Bank Account
special arrangement with National Westminster Bank allowing BUNAC students to easily open an account.

Special UK tax concession
and basic emergency insurance coverage.

Social Program
a great way to meet other participants through regular pub meets and trips to places of interest in Britain and Europe.

BUNAC offices
in London and Edinburgh act as resource centers for finding work, accommodations and to organize social programs for participants.
