This is a question that is often asked by non-jumpers and very hard to answer without a common frame of reference. Skydiving is exhilarating, scary, fun, and relatively safe all at the same time. Looking down from almost 2 miles above the earth and intending to jump and freefall for almost a minute before opening your parachute is an experience that less than one tenth of one percent of the population has tried. Hard to believe because of the simple fact that when people are asked the question "What is one thing that you would like to do in your life?" many answer, "SKYDIVE!" With the advent of Tandem Skydiving, experiencing the thrill of freefall is easier and safer than it has ever been. Statistically the Tandem 1st jump method is the safest and fastest way to begin skydiving. Additionally, tandem skydives normally require less than 15 minutes of ground training and don't cost a fortune. This allows the student to get the whole freefall experience in a relatively minimal amount of time and expense. If they decide that they like it (which is almost always the case) then they can register for a daylong course that will teach them how to use the equipment, what to do in freefall and how to steer and land their own canopy. This is called Accelerated Freefall or AFF training and has become the standard that skydivers use to progress towards a license. Once you've made that first leap inevitably someone will ask the question, "Why would anyone jump from a perfectly good airplane?" It will be easy to answer, "Because the door was open!"
