Ski Utah: Salt Lake Offers Variety and Value
Story by Christian Nophsker

Utah has long been known for its legendary powder skiing. The quality of the snow and quantity of snow has always made skiing in Utah a great choice. The Salt Lake area is a great winter destination because it has a great variety for skiing, but it also has great culture, value, and accessibility.

The Salt Lake region is a great destination for skiers and snowboarders because there are ten major ski resorts, eight cross-country areas, and the nation’s only recreational ski complex that are located within an hour of downtown Salt Lake City. Deer Valley and Alta are still one of the few “skier only” resorts but the rest welcome boarders with open arms. Perhaps the best known ski resort in the are is Snowbird. Snowbird has it all! Huge bowls, bumps, tree skiing, and wide-open fields. Long known for its bottomless powder and steep terrain, Snowbird has multiple terrain parks and a halfpipe creating a one-two punch of world-class big mountain riding as well as park features for all abilities. Snowbird is located only 29 miles from the Salt Lake City airport and is one of North America’s most accessible year-round resorts. Other notable ski resorts are Park City, and local favorites like The Canyons, Snowbasin and Brighton. If you are traveling with children, a great choice is Brighton because children ten years and younger ski free any day!

All the major ski resorts have slope side accommodations, but Salt Lake City is a great city to stage your vacation because of its proximity to all the major ski areas, value accommodations, and great culture. Salt Lake City was the home of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and is blessed with a lasting legacy of world class venues for all to enjoy. The 2002 Winter Games supercharged the economy and Salt Lake City is teeming with great shopping areas like “The Gateway”  open air shopping complex  downtown, great restaurants, and nightlife. The events calendar is packed year round , and one notable winter celebration is the Sundance Film Festival in January. The festival is hosted in Park City, but many of the films are screened in Salt Lake City as well. Transportation is also great in the Salt Lake region because most major ski areas are accessible from Salt Lake City by public transportation.
