Beasts of the East
Collegian Travel & Adventure Magazine
Spring/Summer 2003

The best whitewater rafting out East can be found in West Virginia. Located in the Allegheny Plateau of the Allegheny Range, the rivers and streams cut through the mountainous terrain. The most notable rivers for whitewater trips, rafting and kayaking in WV are the New River and Gauley River. Each of these rivers is further divided into different sections offering diverse adventures.

Upper New River, WV
Think whitewater rafting is only for the extreme? Think again. Gentle and playful, the Upper New is a wonderfully diverse section of river that appeals to all ages.

Lower New River, WV
Big, fast, playful and fun, the Lower New River is a whitewater roller coaster ride of towering, crashing waves. With more than 25 Class II to Class IV+ rapids, the Lower New River offers enough thrills and adventure for any enthusiast. One of the oldest rivers in the world, the "New" cuts its bed from the rugged West Virginia hills, winding through the 1,000 foot gorge known far and wide as The Grand Canyon of the East -- a breathtaking sight in her spring, summer, or fall colors. For one day or more, this is a memorable adventure for both the experienced and beginners.

Gauley River, WV
Considered one of the top ten whitewater rivers in the world, the Gauley is West Virginia's legendary run. Each fall, Summersville Dam opens wide to unleash this "Beast of the East." Over 22 days of high adventure and fun, thousands of gallons of water per second begin their roaring, pounding journey to the sea... dropping 650 feet over 26 miles, thundering and frothing over thousands of boulders, and creating steep drops, massive holes, and colossal waves. Technically demanding, the Gauley offers more than 100 major rapids, 56 of them Class III-V+. So, grab a paddle and a guide, because this is Gauley Season, and to you it means unmatched and unforgettable excitement.
