The Castle Rock Institute
How do you get away from campus for a semester of outdoor adventure, but still receive 16 hours of
academic credit? You enroll at the Castle Rock Institute. Different from other outdoor organizations, CRI sponsors off-campus programs for college students that combine Humanities courses (religion, philosophy, literature and art) with great hiking, climbing, biking, and paddling. Students join a small group, live together in a mountain lodge, take four courses taught mostly in natural settings - around a fire, at an overlook, near a waterfall, etc. - and enjoy regular outdoor activity. Jeff Carter, the Institute’s Director, explains that CRI is designed to create a balance of personal, intellectual, and physical challenges that when met in a close-knit group, are extraordinarily rewarding. The CRI base camp is in the mountains of North Carolina, but they take trips all over the southeast, to the Florida Everglades, the Congaree Swamp in SC, and the Cedar Creek cave in TN, for example. Their international program currently travels to Australia, and eventually will include New Zealand and Baja, Mexico. Castle Rock lets you be in school and be outside.

North Carolina State University's
Outdoor Leadership Minor Department of Physical Education
The Outdoor Leadership Minor at North Carolina State University is one of the best-kept secrets in the southeast. Nestled in the state Capital of Raleigh, the NC State Outdoor Leadership Minor offers students a variety of activity courses as well as theory-based courses that guarantee the graduating student excellent preparation for entering the outdoor adventure industry. The program is offered to more than 29,000 students that attend NC State and is comprised of 5 full-time faculty that have over a century’s worth of combined field experience. Students can choose from a variety of activity courses that include backpacking, flatwater and whitewater canoeing, basic and intermediate rock climbing, sea kayaking, mountaineering, mountain biking, and whitewater rafting. The activity classes are able to utilize the central location of the school to the numerous recreation areas. For example, whitewater rafting classes take field trips to the upper and lower Gauley river to experience some of the nation’s best whitewater; sea kayaking classes make a day’s drive to the Florida Keys to experience marine life at its finest, and the mountaineering class takes a 10-day trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire for a true mountaineering experience. One of the most unique resources the program uses is located right on campus. The university has one of the less than half-dozen sculpted concrete rockwalls in the country, which allows for real-life scenarios such as top-rope anchor construction, rappelling, and various rescue situations. There are many resources in close proximity to the campus the program is able to use in order to give the students the best preparation possible upon leaving the program.
